Cuando en 1989 nos integramos en la misión arqueológica que el IPOA había organizado en Siria, bajo la dirección del Prof. G. DEL OLMO LETE, no podíamos prever lo que en aquellas tierras, alejadas, creíamos entonces, de los centros neurálgicos del mundo romano, habríamos de encontrar. La orientación de la investigación arqueológica era y sigue siendo, pues no puede ser de otro modo, el estudio de la tierra en las etapas de las grandes culturas de los milenios IV- 1 a. C. Con esa finalidad estábamos excavando y del buen hacer de tales trabajos son prueba las dos memorias de excavaciones ya publicadas sobre el Te11 Qara QikQ y las tres tesis doctorales ya leídas con base en tales trabajos.

El origen de la presente publicación hay que buscarlo en 1989. Desde esa fecha, entre las labores realizadas por la Misión Arqueológica Española en Siria se encontraba un ambicioso programa de prospección y estudio del territorio, en el cual se enmarcaban los yacimientos donde se estaba excavando (Tell Qara Qüzaq y Tell Jamís). Esta empresa no sólo abarcaba una amplia zona de telTeno sino también un extenso marco cronológico. A raíz de esta linea de investigación inicial se emprendió un trabajo de campo directo y de mayor intensidad en torno a todos los restos de época romana y bizantina que se habían localizado en las continuas excavaciones y prospecciones en Siria del lnstituto del Próximo Oriente Antiguo.

The north of Syria, specially the banks of the Euphrates River, is an extremely rich zone of rock art or troglodytic heritage. Throughout cliffs and mounts that border the river, are opened lot of tombs, monasteries, hermitages, aqueducts, etc. The objective of this work is to present the particularities of this rich heritage, practically unknown, thus favouring its analysis and protection. The archaeological and historical method provides a context to these places within the historical period, in which they were made. Most of them belong to Roman, Late-Roman and Byzantines times, a big temporary mark that includes from century 1st B.C. to 7th A.D. The excavation of tombs for funeral uses was usual in these moments of history, and the improvement of the technique of the rock-art helped to make a lot of types and varieties of tombs and pantheons. The caves, which were conceived like refuge of hermits and monks in the Byzantine times, are especially rich. Fortunately, thanks to the check of the literary sources many of these enclosures have been dated and they stop being anonymous structures.

Since 1989, among the works carried out by the Spanish Archaeological Mission in Syria, was an program of surveys and study of the territory in which there was digging (Tell Qara Quzaq and Tell Jamis). This program didn't only include a wide land area but also an extensive chronological horizon. This way, taking advantage of this archaeological research in the Euphrates you could verify the existence of numerous figured caves, of funeral nature some and monkish others. Soon after this line of initial research, this Thesis sees the light from the Instituto del Próximo Oriente Antiguo (IPOA) that offered me the possibility to study directly and in more intensity all the remains of Roman and Byzantine time that had been located in its continuous excavations and surveys in Syria, concretely in Qara Quzaq's environment, main centre of the archaeological mission from where the IPOA acted in this region.
