WA Premier still hopes to reach opening date without spread

By Dan Nancarrow

Mark McGowan repeated his hope that the state would make it to the February 5 opening date without spread of the virus.

"This may be the event that provides us with community spread of the virus, very sadly and very unfortunately," he said.

"That's why I'm saying to everyone, please go and get vaccinated as soon as you can."

This was echoed by the Police Commissioner Chris Dawson, who said while 100,000 people had now received a booster, 165,000 more were eligible and should get it as soon as possible.

Pharmacistssay more needs to be done to stop burnout

By Dan Nancarrow

All the COVID news for Australia on December 23 — As it happened (2)

Pharmacists are calling for funding equity between them and general practitioners who administer COVID-19 vaccinations, to help avoid workforce burnout and ensure Australia's immunisation schedule stays on track.

Yesterday, the Commonwealth announced payments made to general practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists who administer boosters would increase by $10 for each jab.

It's a move welcomed by the national president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA), Chris Freeman, who said several pharmacists had been considering withdrawing from the vaccine program, because of financial and logistical pressures.

He said many had stayed on because of a commitment to the community, but warned it was not sustainable.

"It's a good start, with the $10, but I think there is some way to go before pharmacists and GPs are fully resourced and helping the community with this," Dr Freeman said.

"Compared to GPs, pharmacists are paid almost half the fee, even with the $10 increase, for doing the exact same job.

"So, while that's welcome, there is still some way to go in terms of making sure there's an equity [in] service provision there."

Most WA contacts are casual

By Dan Nancarrow

Close contacts have to get tested and isolate for 14 days, while casual contacts need to isolate until they get a negative test.

Mr McGowan said, at the moment, the overwhelming majority of contacts are casual.

"We know of five close contacts — the backpacker's girlfriend, and his four housemates," he said.

He warned this number may grow.

By Dan Nancarrow

Mr McGowan said the backpacker had been using the Safe WA app, which has enabled contact tracers to build a comprehensive picture of the man's movements since his arrival in Perth.

"This is an important reminder for us to keep checking in, now more than ever."
